SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Orbit Industries donated over 300 electrical products to Lone Star Construction Trades Training (CTT). The non-profit organization utilized Orbit products for its Helmets to Hardhats class in late January — a free event for military veterans, transitioning soldiers, national guardsmen, and military spouses. Veterans who attended this 5-day, 40-hour training course got a taste of the electrical trade, which they can now parlay towards a future apprenticeship.
This year’s Helmets to Hardhats event was held at the South Texas Electrical Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee (SOTX) headquarters. Fourteen veterans and spouses filled the classroom seats for this hands-on event, which covered basic electrical theory, electrical code, blueprints, and tool safety. Students learned how to wire switches, GFCI receptacles, 3-way switches, duplex receptacles, cut-in boxes, bend conduit, and wire-up panels. Attending veterans even got a chance to build light-up “robots” from leftover boxes, fittings, and cable.
Lonestar Electric Supply of San Antonio, Texas, hosted this years’ Helmets to Hardhats event. They reached out to manufacturing partner Orbit Industries, which donated over 300 electrical junction boxes, connectors, and couplings to the worthy cause. “Orbit really came through for us on this one,” said Wayne Kotzur, Sales Specialist for Lonestar Electric Supply.
“We had a blast!” said Lonestar CTT instructor and IBEW electrician, Rebecca Young. “This was our first training at the San Antonio location. It was amazing to have Lonestar (Electric Supply) and Orbit donate their time and products to help us out.”
