2025 30 Under 35 Profile: Tyler Penrod

Tyler Penrod, 35
Industrial Area Sales Manager
Crescent Electric Supply

Tyler has been in the electrical industry for more than a decade, having grown up around it and officially stepping into the field shortly after college. “With a family legacy rooted in the industry, I gained early exposure to the values of hard work, integrity, and customer service. These principles continue to guide me today,” he said.

He joined Crescent Electric Supply in 2022 and currently serves as the Industrial area sales manager for Wisconsin and Northern Illinois, where he leads a team focused on strategic growth in the industrial automation sector. “Since joining the company, I’ve been fortunate to earn increasing levels of responsibility through a combination of consistent performance, relationship building, and strategic growth initiatives,” he explained. “Each challenge has given me a broader perspective and appreciation for the industry. I’ve led key initiatives resulting in double-digit growth in regional automation sales, established national account relationships, and accelerated industrial market expansion efforts in high-potential industrial territories. These results have been fueled by a strong focus on customer needs, alignment with top-tier vendor partners, and a commitment to delivering solutions, not just products.”

Coming from a family in the electrical industry, Tyler noted how, in so in many ways, his career path chose him before he even realized it. “I grew up hearing stories about relationships, challenges, and the satisfaction that comes from solving real problems for customers,” he said. “I saw firsthand how critical this industry is to keeping our infrastructure, manufacturing, and economy running. What appealed most to me as a new hire was the opportunity to combine technical knowledge with relationship-driven work, while making an immediate and tangible impact. I was drawn to the challenge of learning complex systems, then translating that knowledge into solutions that help customers operate more efficiently and reliably. I also appreciate and saw firsthand the stability and long-term growth potential the industry offers.”

Tyler went on to explain how, from day one, he saw how this industry rewards those who are both technically curious and deeply committed to serving others—and it’s that blend of problem-solving and purpose that hooked him and still motivates him today. “With the rise of automation, digitalization, energy efficiency, and an aging workforce and infrastructure, we are helping customers solve bigger and more strategic problems than ever before,” he said. “The opportunity to lead meaningful changes, whether it is helping a manufacturing plant become more efficient, mentoring a new sales rep, or launching a major sales initiative, the work is dynamic and fulfilling. I feel fortunate to be part of an industry that still values trust, hard work, and innovation. I believe we are just scratching the surface of what’s possible, and I’m excited to be part of the next generation helping shape what comes next.”

Asked about one of the most pressing challenges in the electrical industry today, Tyler pointed to bridging the growing gap between rapidly advancing technology and a workforce that’s aging and increasingly stretched thin. “With the rise of automation, digital transformation, and Industry 4.0, customers are being asked to adopt more sophisticated systems, often with fewer internal resources and limited technical support,” he explained. “In my role, I focus on helping customers simplify that complexity. I work closely with manufacturers, OEMs, industrial end-users, and system integrators to align the right automation and control solutions with customers’ operational goals. That means going beyond selling products; it means being a trusted partner who understands their process, their pain points, and their long-term vision. I spend a significant portion of my time connecting customers with technical resources, training programs, and implementation support to ensure adoption is successful, not just a transaction. I also collaborate with our vendor partners to make sure we are positioning the right technologies in a way that is accessible, scalable, and realistic for the customer’s environment. Whether it’s introducing predictive maintenance tools, modernizing legacy systems, or helping manufacturers navigate workforce shortages through smarter automation, I see my role as a translator between complex technology and practical business impact.

“This consultative, problem-solving approach has allowed us to deepen customer relationships, drive double-digit growth in automation sales, and deliver measurable ROI for the industrial clients we serve,” he continued. “In a time when our industry faces disruption and transformation, I see that challenge as an opportunity to lead with clarity, consistency, and real solutions.”

Looking ahead, Tyler’s next career goal is to step into a national executive leadership role. “I am prepared to drive strategy, mentor emerging talent, and help scale impact across a broader footprint,” he said. “I am passionate about building high-performing teams, deepening customer partnerships, and driving sustainable growth, and I believe this next step will allow me to do all three at a larger level. To prepare for that role, I’m continuing to build my leadership foundation both academically and experientially. I am currently completing my MBA in August 2025, which has challenged me to think more strategically about finance, global markets, organizational behavior, and marketing. I have also been intentional about seeking out cross-functional projects, mentoring team members, and engaging directly with our executive leadership team and industry organizations to gain broader business insight. I have taken the lead on initiatives that impact national and regional performance.

“I approach every opportunity with the mindset that I am already operating at the next level, thinking proactively, leading with accountability, and focusing on long-term value creation,” he added. “Ultimately, my goal is not just to advance my own career but also help shape the future of our company and industry by fostering a culture of continuous innovation, internal and external collaboration, and customer obsession.”

What would Tyler tell someone just entering the industry? “First and foremost, I would tell them they have made a great choice,” he said. “The electrical industry is incredibly rewarding, not just because of the career opportunities, but because of the real-world impact we make every day. This is a field where hard work, curiosity, and integrity are consistently rewarded.”

His advice? “Stay curious and commit to lifelong learning,” said Tyler. “Technology is always evolving, and the most successful people are those who invest time in understanding how it works, how it helps customers, and how it’s changing the landscape. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or lean on mentors; there’s a wealth of knowledge in this industry, and most people are more than willing to share if you show initiative. At the same time, never lose sight of the human element. Relationships are everything in this business. People want to work with those they trust, who listen well, and who genuinely care about solving their problems. The combination of technical skill and emotional intelligence will take you farther than either one alone. Also, remember that impact doesn’t always happen overnight. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed early on, but every small win, every lesson learned, and every customer conversation adds up. Be patient, stay focused, and take pride in being part of an industry that powers progress in every corner of society. Lastly, bring your full self to the job. The industry needs fresh perspectives, new energy, and diverse voices to shape what comes next. If you’re willing to put in the effort and lead with purpose, the opportunities are limitless in the electrical industry.”

Outside of work, Tyler’s biggest joy is spending quality time with his wife and son. “We love exploring local parks, mountain biking together, and just being outdoors as a family, it’s where I recharge and stay grounded. I am especially grateful for the moments when I get to see the world through my son’s eyes; it reminds me why I work hard and stay focused.”

Giving back is also a big part of who Tyler is. “I volunteer at my church as a drummer on the worship team, which allows me to combine my love of music with service. I also volunteer with Special Spaces, an incredible organization that creates dream bedroom makeovers for children battling cancer,” he explained. “Being able to bring joy and comfort to families during such a difficult time has been a humbling and deeply meaningful experience.”

In his free time, Tyler also enjoys tackling DIY home projects. “There’s something satisfying about building or fixing something with your own hands,” he said. “I also love traveling and exploring new places, whether it’s a weekend getaway or a trip across the country. When I can slow down, I enjoy diving into a good business book or leadership podcast. I’m always looking for ways to grow, both personally and professionally, and I believe the best leaders are those who never stop learning.”
