Department Of Energy Reports 2015 Lighting Use

A new report by the U.S. Department of Energy looks at the lighting market, characterization, and use of all lighting in 2015.  The report includes LED lighting, along with incandescent and halogen lamps, high efficiency CFL’s and LED lamps and luminaries.  The report looks at lighting in residential, commercial, industrial and outdoor sectors.

The report shows lighting created 641 terawatt hours, or approximately 16% of all electricity use in the United States in 2015.  Nearly 40 percent of the lighting use was done in the commercial sector, where fluorescent lighting was the dominant light being used.

The DoE says LED lighting made up about 8% of all installed lights, with HID lighting at 34 percent and linear fluorescent at 33 percent.  LED lighting was installed in 22 percent of outdoor lighting.
