For the 55th straight year, GE Lighting designed and lit the National Christmas Tree on November 30 in President’s Park. It is the 95th year for a tree lighting ceremony.
The tree lighting dates back to 1923, when President Calvin Coolidge lit the tree in front of 3,000 spectators. Since then, every president has continued the tradition.
This year’s tree lighting ceremony was broadcast on the Hallmark Channel on December 4. The event can currently be viewed on the National Tree Lighting website. Harry Truman first televised the tree lighting ceremony event in 1946.
GE Lighting has been designing the National Christmas Tree since 1963. It creates and donates all of the lighting and decorations.
