Following the August 11 stream by the Get A Grip On Lighting podcast to begin a series of sessions on technical updates, host Michael Colligan joined tED magazine Publisher Scott Costa to talk about sustainability in the lighting industry.
Guest speakers Kate Hickcox and Gabe Arnold discussed practical approaches that lighting specifiers and manufacturers can take to reduce the impact of embodied carbon in a product or project at different stages in the lifecycle. They’ll also shared their views on how the lighting industry can embrace the principles of the circular economy, such as Design for Disassembly, to extend the lifecycle of products, reduce their carbon footprint, and facilitate recycling efficiency.
Following that conversation, Colligan and Costa talked about the science that has been behind sustainability for the past 40 years, what stakeholders really need to do to increase sustainability, and if commoditization is really needed for lighting products.
