NEW YORK — To track how top global firms across industries are rising to the challenge in the fight against climate change, TIME and data firm Statista partnered to rank the world’s 500 most sustainable companies based on their public commitment to and progress toward sustainability targets during the calendar year of 2023.
The ranking evaluates a pool of 5,700 companies across 20 key performance indicators, ultimately naming 500 of the World’s Most Sustainable Companies. It assesses factors such as Scope 1 and 2 emissions and energy consumption relative to company size, emissions reductions, and the proportion of renewable energy used in operations. It also considers external factors, including sustainability ratings and commitments, corporate reporting practices, and environmental and social performance indicators.
The top-ranked company on this year’s list is Schneider Electric. In its first quarter 2025 report, Schneider said it surpassed sustainability targets in 2024, helped RichLand Logistics launch new EV trucks for last-mile delivery, and deployed Schneider Charge Pro EV charging stations in Europe. It has also directly helped other high-ranking companies on the list reduce their footprints.
Additionally, TIME recognized Schneider Electric as part of its 2025 TIME100 Most Influential Companies campaign, awarding it the first-ever Impact in Sustainability award and noting its role in supporting the sustainability practices of 40% of the Fortune 500.
“We’re incredibly honored to be recognized as the world’s most sustainable company for the second year in a row,” said Olivier Blum, CEO of Schneider Electric. “As a technology company, our goal is to be the trusted partner of our customer to deliver efficiency and sustainability. At Schneider, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We strive to be an Impact Company—where performance is the foundation. Our purpose drives us to engage our entire ecosystem, our mission positions us as part of the solution, and our culture sets us apart. This holistic approach ensures that every aspect of our operations and value chain contributes to a more sustainable world.”
Other electrical industry companies made the list as well: Siemens (9), ABB (14), Prysmian Group (39), Rexel (60), Philips (64), Eaton (239), Signify (342), Legrand (449).
“Being among the top 15 in the World’s Most Sustainable Companies 2025 list is testament to ABB’s strategic approach of embedding sustainability into the business with a focus on transparency and accountability,” said Anke Hampel, ABB’s Group Head of Sustainability. “Our Sustainability Agenda aims to enable a low-carbon society, preserve resources and promote social progress for a net-zero future. As a global technology leader in electrification and automation, we help our customers optimize energy use, reduce emissions, and accelerate the transition to more resilient, resource-efficient operations.”
