2025 30 Under 35 Profile: Emma Peterson

Emma Peterson, 31
Senior Category Manager
nVent

Emma has been working in procurement and supply chain management for more than eight years, with experience spanning strategic sourcing and product development across industries like fashion, manufacturing, and retail. “I joined nVent in October 2023 as a category manager, where I managed indirect spend across the United States and Canada,” she recalled. “In January 2025, I was promoted to senior category manager, a role in which I have grown to own and oversee Capex projects for large infrastructure developments and support sourcing integration for mergers and acquisitions. My time at nVent has been marked by process improvements, cost savings, and cross-functional collaboration.”

Emma’s journey into the manufacturing procurement industry began in 2019 when she made a deliberate shift from retail and fashion merchandising to focus solely on sourcing and supply chain management. “This transition was driven by a growing interest in the operational and strategic side of product creation—particularly how things are made, sourced, and brought to life at scale,” she said. “I returned to the fashion world, but this time from a manufacturing standpoint, which allowed me to blend my creative background with a more analytical and process-driven role.”

nVent was the pivotal opportunity that brought Emma back to Minnesota and fully immersed her in the manufacturing industry. “As a new hire, I was drawn to the complexity and impact of procurement in large-scale operations—especially the chance to lead sourcing for capital equipment and infrastructure projects with multi-million-dollar budgets,” she explained. “The ability to influence outcomes across engineering, operations, and logistics was both challenging and deeply rewarding.”

Asked what continues to appeal to her about the industry, Emma pointed to the dynamic nature of the work. “Every project is different, and I thrive in environments that require cross-functional collaboration, strategic thinking, and continuous improvement,” she said. “I also find great satisfaction in building processes, driving cost savings, and supporting innovation—whether it’s through sustainable sourcing initiatives or integrating new technologies. The industry constantly evolves, and that keeps me engaged and motivated to grow.”

Emma believes that one of the biggest challenges currently facing the industry is the exponential growth happening at a pace that’s difficult to keep up with, from not only a material and space perspective, but also talent and headcount. “This kind of rapid expansion puts pressure on sourcing, procurement processes, and cross-functional alignment—especially when integrating new sites or scaling infrastructure,” she said. “In my role, I’m actively helping to meet this challenge by building and refining scalable sourcing processes that can adapt to fast-changing demands. I’ve led efforts to streamline intake and purchasing workflows and support M&A activity. I’m also focused on collaborating closely with internal stakeholders to ensure sourcing strategies are aligned with long-term growth goals. By staying proactive and solution-oriented, I’m helping nVent navigate this growth while maintaining operational efficiency and strategic focus.”

Looking ahead, Emma’s next career goal is to oversee Indirect Spend from a Global standpoint for the Systems Protection division at nVent. “I’m passionate about driving strategic sourcing initiatives and building scalable processes that support growth across multiple sites,” she said. “Since joining nVent, I’ve taken on increasing responsibility—from managing sourcing for 14 manufacturing sites to leading capital purchases for major infrastructure projects and supporting M&A integrations.”

To prepare for this next step, Emma has been focused on deepening her cross-functional partnerships, refining intake and purchasing workflows, and gaining visibility into broader divisional needs. “I’m also staying proactive in learning new procurement technologies and aligning sourcing strategies with long-term business goals,” she added. “I’m committed to growing with nVent and contributing to its continued success through operational excellence and strategic leadership.”

What would Emma tell someone new to the industry? “The electrical and industrial sectors are evolving with new technologies and sustainability goals,” she said. “I encourage professionals to stay informed about industry trends, codes and standards, and innovative solutions. This mindset will help you remain competitive and valuable in your role. I would also suggest [placing] a strong emphasis on education and professional development and getting out into the industry through conventions and connecting with cross-functional partners. Be prepared to move quickly as things are always changing and growing. I recommend building relationships with experienced professionals to learn best practices.”

Outside of work, Emma has a wide range of interests that keep her energized and connected. “I’m a golfer and a big sports fan, especially when it comes to hockey, which plays a big role in my life,” she said. “I also have a creative side—I love hair and makeup, and I enjoy exploring new trends and techniques, and helping friends and family with large events, including weddings.”

Giving back is important to Emma, too. “I serve as the executive chair for the ALS Association Midwest Chapter Gala Committee, where I help lead efforts to raise awareness and funds for a cause that’s close to my heart,” she said. “At nVent, I’m also involved in a leadership board focused on Development for the Global Women’s Network ERG, which allows me to support and empower women across the organization and within the community.”
