Recent discussions with industry leaders have provided more details on how these factors are viewed in their businesses:
- While artificial intelligence is expanding opportunities to improve planning, decision-making, and operational visibility, physical automation is just beginning to reshape how work moves through the warehouse.
- Persistent labor shortages are increasing the need to simplify and automate processes, preserve institutional knowledge, and equip employees with tools that improve productivity and effectiveness.
- Customer expectations are becoming more complex. Distributors are being asked to manage larger and more customized projects, provide greater transparency throughout the fulfillment process, and deliver additional value-added services—all while controlling costs and maintaining flexibility.
Although these shifts are broadly affecting the industry, they will not produce a singular, universal warehouse operations model. The right path will depend on each distributor’s scale, customers, network, and capabilities.
