The Acuity Brands, Inc. (NYSE: AYI) Carlisle, Penn. manufacturing and distribution center has achieved zero landfill status, as certified by Link International, a California-based full-service waste and recyclable commodities company. This is the second Acuity Brands manufacturing and distribution site to operate as a zero landfill plant. Waste generated by the Carlisle plant is now recycled or composted.
“We are thrilled to implement the zero landfill process at a second site within our plant facilities network,” said Derek Nelson, Vice President, Northeast Operations at Acuity Brands Lighting. “As a manufacturer of products that help reduce energy waste, it is important to us to be sustainably responsible at our own facilities, and be at the forefront of the environmental movement.”
Zero landfill is the practice of completely eliminating industrial wastes through recycling, avoiding the use of landfills for waste disposal. Zero landfill plants in the Acuity Brands network now include operations in Los Angeles, Calif. and Carlisle, Penn. Current zero landfill attributes include:
- Trash compactor conversion
- Scrap metal collection
- Plastic and cardboard balers
- Scrap wood collection/broke pallet rebuild program
- Signage and containers for easy separation
- No trash collection
Achieving zero landfill status at Acuity Brands facilities is part of its overall sustainability commitment to reduce harmful impacts on the environment. The Carlisle, Penn. facility allocates a portion of its monthly savings attributed to recycling to benefit the local Carlisle community. It recently donated 40 U.S. flags to community spaces including fire houses, police stations, schools and recreational facilities.
