Ask Your Senator to Support the Metal Theft Prevention Act

NAED Members,

I am writing to let you know that one of the US Senators representing your state is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will be voting on the Metal Theft Prevention Act this Thursday, June 13. This Act is a multi-faceted bill that would make it more difficult for thieves to sell their metal at scrap yards.

To help get this bill passed out of Committee and to the Senate floor, now is the time to call or write to your Senator. This will only take a minute: below is sample text you can use; please take a moment to personalize your message and either put it on company letterhead or send a personal email. Email governmentaffairs@naed.org and we’ll send you the best contact information for your Senator. Also please copy us or let us know if you contact your Senator.,

Your elected officials want to hear from you – they listen to their constituents.  ,

You can find the Judiciary Committee members listed here: http://www.judiciary.senate.gov/about/members.cfm,

SAMPLE LETTER

Please vote in favor of the Metal Theft Prevention Act of 2013 (S. 394) during the Judiciary Committee vote this Thursday, June 13.

Metal theft is a persistent problem that plagues many businesses, including electrical distributors like my company. Copper theft is a big problem in our industry: according to a research study conducted by the National Association of Electrical Distributors, 85% of electrical distributors have experienced theft from external sources, with cable and wire being the most common products stolen. This bill would help reduce metal theft by making it more difficult for thieves to sell their metal at scrap yards, and I ask your support.

I am pleased with the multi-faceted approach of this legislation and believe it would decrease the prevalence of metal theft. I ask your support this week with a “yes” vote for the Act.

Sincerely,
