Emerson Joins European Clean Hydrogen Alliance

BAAR, Switzerland – Emerson has demonstrated the strength of its commitment to environmental sustainability by becoming a member of the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance (ECHA). Hydrogen’s share of the energy mix in Europe is currently less than 2%, but has the potential to rise to 10-23% by 2050, according to the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre. In joining the ECHA, Emerson will be at the forefront of hydrogen developments in Europe, thereby actively supporting the goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, as outlined in the European Union’s European Green Deal.

Hydrogen is a key enabler to achieve the objectives of the European Green Deal and Europe’s clean energy transition. It has several energy and non-energy uses, from storing renewable energy to fueling heavy transport, and as energy and feedstock in energy-intensive industries, such as in the steel or chemical sectors. Crucially, hydrogen is climate-friendly as it does not emit any carbon dioxide when used. It therefore offers a solution to decarbonize energy-intensive industrial processes and economic sectors where reducing carbon emissions is both urgent and difficult to achieve.

The ECHA was established by the European Commission in March 2020 as part of its new industrial strategy for Europe. Its aim is to bring together manufacturers, automation technology suppliers, public authorities, and other stakeholders with a view to tackling climate change and benefiting the environment by accelerating the decarbonization of industry and the transition to hydrogen-based energy.

Emerson is a global technology and software company with an extensive portfolio of measurement, control and electrical equipment for hazardous areas, and deep experience in setting industry standards. This makes it the perfect partner to support companies in the fast-growing hydrogen market by providing solutions to meet their most demanding applications. As a member of the ECHA, Emerson is committed to providing solutions to the challenges faced throughout the entire hydrogen fuel supply chain, including the need for expanded production, safe and lower-cost distribution, and reliable fuel cell operation. Emerson’s experience with key industry enablers such as electrolyzer original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will help to drive down costs and improve the scalability of hydrogen production, distribution, and utilization.

“Emerson’s advanced automation technologies are backed by global support from industry experts who understand the specific expectations of the hydrogen sector relating to safety, reliability and cost,” said Roel van Doren, group president global sales of Emerson. “This industry-leading combination of innovative technologies and expertise will enable Emerson to contribute to the valuable work of the ECHA by helping organizations optimize the performance of their hydrogen projects, thereby supporting the push to achieve carbon neutrality.”
