In case you haven’t noticed, the NFL season started a couple of weeks ago.
And in case you haven’t noticed, at least one team is a little more “bright” than in years past.
Caught beside the fact that the Atlanta Falcons are 2-0 on the season is the fact that fans and players are noticing the teams new Mercedes Benz Stadium is lit like no other stadium in the country. The “open-air” concept allows daylight to shine in from the retractable roof and the sides of the stadium that display the Atlanta skyline. But that’s when the Falcons play during the day.
What has really set the stadium apart over the past few weeks is the night games. The Falcons played the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night, September 16. And the fans in the stadium and at home noticed some significant changes.
Website SB Nation pointed out “It’s not your imagination” that the stadium looks different. “Part of the effort was installing LED lights, which stadium representatives say are softer and brighter than the florescent lighting used in most stadiums” SB Nation explained. And it’s not just for the fans attending the game. SB Nation added that the LED lights also makes the game look better for people watching on their televisions at home. In fact, many people took to Twitter to say they thought the Sunday night game looked just like a game being played in the afternoon.
Mercedes Benz Stadium is the first sports arena to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Development) Platinum status.
There are still big plans for Mercedes Benz Stadium, and you will be able to see the LED lighting for yourself in the near future. In addition to the Falcons games, the stadium already hosted college footballs kickoff game for the 2017 season, and will host the College Football National Championship Game in January, the Peach Bowl, the Super Bowl in 2019, the NCAA basketball Final Four, and Atlanta United soccer games.
