KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Milbank Manufacturing has been honored with two recent awards for recognition of its efforts to foster a safe work environment for all employees. Without a safe facility and an environment of continuous improvement and employee development, Milbank could not continue to innovate and meet customer demands for products. Over the past few years, Milbank has received several awards for manufacturing excellence, employee development, and safety.
Milbank’s Kansas City plant was recently recognized with the Safety Innovation Award from the Missouri Association of Manufacturers as part of their annual Safety Excellence Awards program. This award recognizes a manufacturer that best demonstrates how innovation within the organization has been developed and applied to create significant safety, health and/or environmental improvements and operational effectiveness.
Several years ago, Milbank committed to reach OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Plan (VPP) and the Kansas City plant received that designation in 2019. Dedication to a value of continuous improvement and improvement of safety efforts helped earn Milbank a Star Among Stars Award from the Region VII Voluntary Protection Programs Participants’ Association (VPPPA) for 2020. Qualification for this recognition requires a VPP participant to have total case incidence rates (TCIR) and days away/restricted/transferred case incidence rates (DART) of at least 50% below the national average.
The success of Milbank’s commitment to safety is evident in the following areas:
- Empowering employees by building open lines of communication
- Positive reinforcement of safe behaviors
- Visual reminders throughout the plant of safety precautions and employee successes
“Walking through the Kansas City plant, you can see Milbank’s dedication to safety evident in all areas,” said Troy Maki, Vice President of Manufacturing for Milbank. “We do what it takes to keep employees safe and cultivate buy-in by seeking input from them to make the right changes,” added Maki.
Milbank’s safety department works closely with the continuous improvement and training departments to obtain measurable improvements in all aspects of the facility and to openly communicate these metrics to employees.
