SOMERSET, N.J. — Royal Philips has won the 2015 Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) Project-of-the-Year Award for Energy and Water, an honor bestowed by ESTCP and the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP), the Department of Defense’s (DoD) environmental research programs. Philips received the award for a demonstration project led by Philips Research North America at Fort Sill, Ok., showing that advanced LED light sources with controls can result in substantial energy and cost savings — 60 to 90 percent depending on the application areas and usage patterns — while improving the quality of light in terms of color rendering and brightness.
Exterior lighting accounts for nearly 10 percent of the electricity consumed at DoD military installations. Many of the existing exterior lighting systems use inefficient high pressure sodium or metal halide lights that are controlled with photo sensors that turn lights on regardless of usage patterns. Dr. Satyen Mukherjee of Philips Research and his team demonstrated that significant electricity savings can be achieved by implementing efficient LED lighting sources and smart lighting controls.
“The learnings from Fort Sill have been helpful in understanding how LED-based lighting systems can be deployed to drive both energy and cost savings for the Department of Defense. Advanced controls with LED light sources reduced energy consumption while also improving the quality of light in terms of color rendering and brightness,” commented Mukherjee.
The project evaluated three exterior lighting applications at U.S. Army Base Fort Sill, Ok. and demonstrated that LED light sources combined with smart systems and controls can be used to achieve significant energy savings and improve illumination in exterior lighting applications at DoD military installations across the country. Deployment has already been carried out – or is being considered – at several other DoD bases including multiple Air Force bases, Fort Bliss, Fort Knox, Fort Dodge and others.
