In this issue of “The Good Stuff,” City Electric Supply in Rincon, Georgia came to the aid of a victim of Hurricane Helen.

RINCON, Ga. — Ever since Hurricane Helen struck Rincon, Georgia in 2024, 83-year-old Peggy Rouse endured months of hardship following significant damage to her home. When a routine welfare check by Shanna Smith, deputy director of Effingham Emergency Management Agency (EEMA), uncovered the severity of the situation, residents, businesses like CES Rincon, and volunteers quickly united to rebuild her home.

The reconstruction project started when local contractor Matt Evans, owner of Centaur Home Renovation Services and Centaur Demolition & Disposal LLC, assessed the damage. A tree had entered the house through the roof, water seepage caused significant structural damage, and black mold covered the walls. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Evans turned to social media to rally support.

“I told Shanna and Ms. Peggy I didn’t know how far my efforts would go, but we can at least try,” Evans said. “I just felt determined to get the roof replaced so we could start a demolition.”

That call to action sparked an overwhelming response. Local businesses, contractors, and neighbors stepped forward to contribute labor, materials, and expertise.

CES Rincon was among the first to respond. Branch Manager Dustin Brown offered to supply electrical materials.

“I was saddened seeing the situation she was in,” Brown said. “We had to do something.”

“Not everyone is in the position to donate materials,” Evans said. “Thank you, CES Rincon, for your help; it’s greatly appreciated.”

Michael’s Roofing repaired the damaged roof. When more materials were needed after demolition, Edwards Interiors, Inc. reached out asking what materials they could donate.

With CES Rincon providing materials and LCD Electric donating labor, the home electrical system was fully rewired with energy-efficient LED lighting and modern fixtures to improve safety and long-term affordability.

Additional contributions came from other local partners, including everything from insulation and drywall to cabinetry, appliances, and landscaping services. More than 70 trees were removed from the property to prevent future damage.

Over seven months, the home underwent reconstruction with an estimated $160,000 in labor and materials donated.

When the project was finished, it was more than just a house that had changed.

For Rouse, the renovation marked a turning point in her life. Instead of relying on grocery deliveries like she used to, Rouse now shops for groceries in person, visits the senior center, and regularly spends time connecting with those around her.

“The right people came together at the right time,” Evans said. “None of this happens without a community willing to show up.”

Today, Rouse not only has a safe and secure place to call home, but also a community of people whom she now calls friends.
