Van Meter Earns “Top Workplace” Honor in Minnesota

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Van Meter Inc., a 100-percent employee-owned electrical and automation distributor and solution provider with 25 locations across the Midwest, announced that it has been selected as one of Minnesota’s 2022 Top Workplaces.

The Top Workplace designation is based on a feedback survey of employees who rate their workplace culture in the areas of alignment, coaching, connection, engagement, leadership, performance, and basic workplace benefits and expectations. Out of the more than 4,000 Minnesota companies that were invited to participate in the 2022 survey, Van Meter ranked 45th among the state’s top mid-size companies.

Van Meter has a set of guiding principles called its 5Ps—People, Partners, Progress, Place, and Profit. According to Lura McBride, the company’s President and CEO, the People P is first for a reason. “We prioritize having a culture where employee-owners know they have a voice and that the work they do has a direct impact on our performance,” said McBride. “Their ideas, energy, and commitment to creating lasting value for others fuels our success. We call it the power of our people.”

Energage, a leading research firm on organizational health and employee engagement, conducts Top Workplace employee feedback surveys annually. They collaborate with publishing partners across the United States to facilitate and promote the program within the business community. In Minnesota, Energage partners with The Star Tribune. The Star Tribune published the complete list of Minnesota’s 2022 Top Workplaces in a special section on Sunday, June 19.

Employee engagement statistics consistently show that highly engaged employees lead to increased profitability, less turnover, and higher customer retention rates.

“Being engaged or having a mental and emotional connection to the work you do, the team you do it with and the business you own together, is a powerful thing. Engaged employees are passionate about their work and their mindset positively impacts company value,” added McBride. “This has proven itself repeatedly at Van Meter; the strength of our engagement score over time mirrors that of our stock value. Simply put, valuing our employee-owners increases the value of our company.”

Van Meter’s team is more than 800 people strong—with 374 of its employee-owners working in the State of Minnesota.
