Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Energy has recognized Schneider Electric for its leadership in the first year of the Better Buildings Challenge. Launched by President Obama in December of 2011, the Better Buildings Challenge is a national leadership initiative that calls on chief executive officers, university presidents, and state and local leaders to reduce their portfolio-wide energy use and share the results of their energy reduction strategies. The industrial component is the Better Plants Challenge and companies commit to a 25% energy intensity improvement over 10 years.
Schneider Electric’s energy intensity has been reduced by 15.6 percent over three years, compared to a goal of 7.5 percent for the period of participation in the Better Buildings Challenge program. On average Better Buildings Challenge partners reduced their energy intensity by 2.5 percent in the first year of the initiative, putting them on track to meet the President’s goal by 2020.
“Through the Better Plants Challenge, our Partners are breaking through barriers to reducing energy intensity and achieving lasting results that save money and create jobs,” said David Danielson, Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. “We applaud these Partners for their leadership in making their organizations more energy-efficient which keeps American businesses competitive.”
Schneider Electric reduced its energy intensity by implementing its own resources to conduct energy assessments at its many locations and then utilizing its products and services to install building automation, renewable energy, energy-efficient lighting, automated lighting control, energy metering and remote monitoring, and variable speed drives. Plans to meet future energy reduction goals include expanded integration of the company’s products and services, continuous re-commissioning, and more renewable energy.
