ROSSLYN, Va. — National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis commented on Senate Finance Committee Chairman Baucus’ energy tax reform proposals released earlier today.
“We couldn’t agree more with the goals set forth in Chairman Baucus’ energy tax draft,” said Gaddis. “Our current set of energy tax incentives is overly complex and should be technology-neutral, increase energy security, and reduce emissions.”
Measures to incentivize energy efficiency—which regrettably are not included in the current draft—are vital components of any plan to cut emissions and increase energy security. According to Gaddis, the energy we don’t use is the cleanest form of energy.
The United States as a nation wastes more energy than it consumes, which is why NEMA has proposed a simple, effective, and technology-neutral package of tax incentives for energy efficiency in buildings, factories, and the electric grid.
Greater energy efficiency in all our sectors will boost economic productivity and competitiveness, enhance U.S. energy security, mitigate outages, and reduce emissions. Energy efficiency is clean, green, and resilient, and should be promoted as a key policy goal in the tax code.
NEMA and its members look forward to working with Chairman Baucus and the committee to develop energy efficiency tax provisions that result in a more productive and secure America.
