Sonepar Celebrates 40 Years in Canada

Growing through acquisition has historically been the ambitious culture of Sonepar. Henri Coisne, Sonepar’s founder, had the goal of expanding the family business beyond Europe and into a new thriving market – North America.

In 1984 Sonepar acquired Lumen, its first operating company outside of Europe, led by Henri’s daughter, Marie-Christine Coisne-Roquette, who now presides as Chairman of the Group’s Supervisory Board.

Forty years later, Sonepar in Canada is comprised of nine operating companies, with over 90 locations, across eight provinces, and has evolved into a key leader in the Canadian electrical industry.

“In Canada, Sonepar has grown substantially since 1984. Not only is Lumen the largest distributor in Quebec, with world-class CDC automation, but all our Canadian businesses are regional leaders with distinct industry strengths and strong community contributions,” said George McClean, Sonepar Canada President. “Today our Canadian business consists of 2000 associates all eager to celebrate our milestone achievement and continue to live out our purpose, ‘Powering Progress for Future Generations.’ We look forward to Sonepar’s future growth in Canada.”

Sonepar commemorated its 40th year with a variety of office initiatives and donating to Our Youth at Work Association, an organization that promotes healthy and safe work environments for students entering the workplace.
