Victim In Mersen Explosion Identified

ST. MARYS, Pa. (AP) – A man
killed in an explosion at a Mersen USA plant in western Pennsylvania last week
has been identified as a worker visiting from New Jersey.

Elk County Coroner Michelle
Muccio and Mersen officials have confirmed the victim was 52-year-old Arwed
Ralf Uecker.

Uecker had worked for the
company for 28 years and was global director of research and development for
Mersen USA Bn Group, which was based in Boonton, N.J.

Uecker was visiting the plant
in St. Marys, about 100 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, when an oven exploded
Thursday morning, killing him and injuring two other workers. One remained
hospitalized in stable condition, while the other was treated and released.

Company officials haven’t
commented on the cause of the blast, which is being investigated by the federal
Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
